History of the use of barley

Barley has been served as a food staple throughout history and amazingly is one of only resources on earth that can provide the human body with the nutrients it needs from birth to old age. Research done by agronomists show that the use of barley dates as early as 8000 B.C. It has been used by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Egyptians. Roman gladiators consumed barley as their sole sustenance. Barley was also used as food staple in the late 16th century Europe. It was mentioned 37 times in the Bible as being used by the Hebrews and Egyptians.

John 6: 9-14 Feeding of 5,000 people
“there is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish…”

II Kings 4: 38-44
“get some barley meal… throw it in a pot and kill the poison…”

Deuteronomy 8: 7-9
“for the Lord God is bringing you into a good land… a land of wheat and barley…”
